New Record: $250,000+ to Food Assistance Programs
All year long, food assistance organizations provide the most basic of necessities—nutritious meals—to individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. During the course of the year, food banks and kitchens get creative in how they spend their small budgets to serve an ever-increasing number of clients.
That's why once again we made donations to these programs our number one cause last year. Between a bank-wide food drive last spring and cash contributions made throughout the year, we donated more than $251,000 and 6,130 pounds of food to more than 120 food assistance organizations in Washington, Idaho, Utah and California.
"The need many families face doesn't take a vacation," said Don Coombs, Branch Manager, in Loa, Utah. "We see it more around the holidays, but it's a daily struggle that doesn't end after the New Year. We recognize that and do as much we can to help those in need.”
In many instances we make an outright cash contribution to help the organization pack, store, purchase and/or serve food to their clients. In some instances our gifts helped shelters with specific food expenses, or food programs for children and elderly. And in the spring of each year we all come together to host a month-long food drive. Our customers and employees join together to donate food we then pass along to organizations in every community we serve.
"Here in our community we made a gift to an organization that looks out for the well-being of children and young adults," said Pam Whitt, Branch Manager in Poulsbo, Washington. "The Backpack Brigade is a special program run by teachers who send backpacks of food home with at-risk elementary school children every Friday. They shop for all the food weekly and are adamant about keeping the recipients confidential. The most exciting part is because of our donation, the waiting list has been eliminated and all the children who need food are receiving help."
"It is a privilege to support the good works and events that help so many find a nutritious meal when they need it most," said Bob Trujillo, Executive Vice President of Community Banking. "Helping in this way is an easy decision—it's simply the right thing to do."
